EV Charging Misconceptions You Should Stop Believing

EV Charging Misconceptions You Should Stop Believing

As electric vehicles (EVs) continue to gain popularity in India and across the world, so do the myths and misconceptions around charging them. Whether it’s range anxiety, infrastructure fears, or misinformation around power consumption, these myths often hold back potential EV buyers and confuse new owners.

Myth 1: “EV Chargers Are Hard to Find”

The Reality:

EV charging infrastructure is growing rapidly, especially in urban areas, highways, and corporate campuses.

In the early days of EV adoption, this concern might have had some merit. But today, the landscape has changed significantly. In India alone, government incentives and private players are accelerating charger installations across metro-cities and commercial hubs.

Moreover, real-time location apps and even Google Maps can help EV users find the nearest charger with availability, connector types, and pricing.

Myth 2: “Charging Takes Forever”

The Reality:

With the right charger, EVs can charge much faster than most people assume. Typically, AC chargers are used at homes and offices. Great for overnight or workday charging. Depending on battery size and charger power, they can fully charge a car in 4 to 8 hours. Ideal for highway top-ups DC chargers, can charge a car just 30–60 minutes, depending on the vehicle.

For most users, charging speed is not a daily issue. Unlike petrol vehicles, EVs are “topped up” frequently at home, at work, or any place of charger availability even if the charge drops to 80% or even 60%.

Myth 3: “EV Charging Will Make My Electricity Bill Skyrocket”

The Reality:

Charging an EV is still significantly cheaper than refuelling with petrol or diesel. Also with current government subsidies in multiple states, EV charging unit costs are way lesser than commercial and residential rates. Even if you’re charging at home, the monthly increase in your electricity bill is usually less than your monthly fuel cost—especially with off-peak charging or solar integration. If you're using corporate campus chargers provided by your employer, then your charging cost is effectively zero during work hours!

Myth 4: “EV Charging Puts Too Much Load on the Power Grid”

The Reality:

Smart charging solutions and managed load distribution ensure grid stability. It’s true that widespread EV adoption requires careful planning, but modern EV chargers are equipped with load management systems that communicate with the grid to prevent overload. Plus, most EVs are charged overnight or during low-demand hours, which minimizes peak stress.

In India, utility companies are already rolling out Time-of-Day pricing to encourage off-peak charging, and corporates are adopting renewable integrations like rooftop solar to power chargers sustainably.

Myth 5: “Charging an EV all the time will degrade the battery quickly”

The Reality:

Modern EVs are designed with smart battery management systems (BMS) that protect against overcharging and excessive wear. Unlike older battery technologies, today’s lithium-ion batteries can handle frequent top-ups without significant degradation. In fact, regular, partial charging is often better than letting the battery drain completely. Most EVs also come with built-in safeguards that automatically stop charging at optimal levels (usually around 80%-90%) to preserve long-term battery health.

So, whether you're plugging in overnight at home or during work hours at a corporate charger, you can charge confidently without worry or fear about harming your battery.
